Editing Directories

Provision is made within the Database File Management (DBFM) system to Create, Delete, Rename and Move directories. This topic describes each these operations.

BE AWARE: Directories that you are currently working on can be deleted, renamed, or moved by a user with appropriate privileges and possibly located on a server remote from the one you are hosted on. If you are a user with these privileges and are intending to carry out one of these actions on a directory, it would be appropriate to warn possible users of your intended action.

Right-clicking on any directory displays a Context Menu providing the following directory editing options. When selecting a directory from within the Directory Tree, only the first two options (Create subdirectory and Delete directory) are available:

Option

Function

Create subdirectory Creates a subdirectory under the directory you have selected.
Delete directory Deletes the selected directory.
Rename directory Provides the option to rename the selected directory.
Directory properties Displays the Directory Properties dialogue for review or editing.
Search directory Displays the directory search form (for find files etc.)

Note: Only users with appropriate directory access privileges will be able to complete the following editing functions. Other users will be presented with a message box stating that they do not have sufficient privileges to complete the operation. In this situation, select OK to the message and the operation will be terminated.

Create Subdirectory

Right-click on the directory that is to be the parent of the subdirectory you wish to create. This directory is now highlighted and the Context Menu defined above is displayed. From the Context Menu, select Create subdirectory and enter the proposed directory name in the pop-up dialogue. Select OK to complete or Cancel to reject the directory creation:

Notes:

  1. Users with insufficient privileges will be presented with a message box. In this situation, select OK to the message and the operation will be terminated.
  2. Only super users can add subdirectories to the 'eServGlobal' root directory.
  3. When a document is uploaded, it inherits the access privileges of the parent directory; it is therefore advisable to set these directory properties at the time of its creation. This is particularly useful when all or most of the documents in a directory will have the same restricted circulation.
  4. If you attempt to give a directory the same name as an existing directory in the same node, an error message will state that "An object of that name already exists..." and the operation will be rejected.
  5. If an illegal character is detected in a directory name, an error message will be displayed and the operation will be rejected.

Delete Directory

Right-click on the directory you wish to delete and select the Delete directory option from the Context Menu. The following pop-up dialogue will request confirmation of the delete. Select OK to complete or Cancel to reject the deletion:

  2. If you attempt to give a directory the same name as an existing directory in the same node, an error message will state that "An object of that name already exists..." and the rename operation will be rejected.
  3. If an illegal character is detected in a directory name, an error message will be displayed and the operation operation will be rejected.

Moving Directories

Directories can be moved from one location to another using Drag-and-Drop. Directories can be moved within the Directory Tree, within the Detail Pane, or from the Directory Tree to the Detail Pane and vice-versa.

Before the move is completed, the following confirmation pop-up dialogue is displayed:
